Do you ever wonder what really goes on behind the scenes at a Newborn Photography Session? Let me take you through a typical Newborn Session, just for fun. It’s a lot of work and a little exciting, but it’s not a job everyone would love. Yes, we all love looking at the portraits of sleeping newborn babies, but there is a lot of work that goes into creating those images. Because we’ve been working with Newborns since 2009, and have the advantage of a skilled Certified Professional Photographer AND a well-trained assistant for safety in posing, our Newborn Session time is usually only 2 hours or less.

On the day of a Newborn Session, we’re going to wear something comfortable and make sure our nails are trimmed and clean.  We also avoid perfumes and scented lotions because they can be irritating to the delicate skin of some newborns. Several hours before the Session, the space heaters are turned on in our studio. The room is quite large and will take a while to warm. Our tiniest visitors are not yet able to regulate their own body temperature and also prefer a warmer room than is comfortable to most adults. The heaters are always near our baby, meaning the photographer will enjoy a few hours in 83+ degree heat, no matter the season.

After welcoming our Newborn’s family to the studio and gathering all the necessary information about the little star of the show, we get to work setting up the scenes for our Newborn Session. Our detailed conversations tell us what colors we’ll use and what props would best suit the client’s style. This leads to climbing up and down ladders, digging through containers, and many trips back and forth from our huge prop closet. Our goal is always to design each session to be unique with the result being beautiful customized artworks for our client’s home. Just like a painting takes forethought, so does a well designed Newborn Session.

When our Newborn Baby is prepped and ready, we get to work moving our little baby, always with extreme safety precaution, from one set to the next and only stopping when he or she is not completely settled. The long version includes lots of crawling around in the floor, sitting cross legged while snuggling a sleeping angel, and working at times through long periods of silence. Every Newborn Baby is different and some can be sound sensitive meaning the adults will need to save their conversations until the end. On the rare occasion our little one is not settled or happy, we put our secret soothing techniques to work. A crying baby unsettles all mothers. And a sleeping baby makes a photographer happy.

Once we have completed our goals for the Newborn Session, about a hour and a half later, we reunite our little one with mommy. Then the clean up begins. Ladders are climbed and props are stored away. Anything that was soiled is washed and sanitized. We have a convenient washing machine and dryer in the studio. And yes, naked babies poop and pee and sometimes it’s on us. You can not be afraid of a little poop as a Newborn Photographer.

The majority of the work is done after the Newborn Session is completed and our guests have returned home. We spend a few days worth of work on each of our wonderful clients. Finally, the images captured are backed up on external hard drives, and go through a few hours of processing before they reach the final artwork stage.. We aren’t creating images that we plan to hand over on a disk for printing sometime next year when the new parent’s lives have settled down enough to allow that. We’re planning to create works of art to love and cherish and adorn their walls for pure enjoyment starting in less than a month. Our Portrait Consultant hand-holds each client through the ordering process to make sure each walks away with exactly what their heart desired. When a new baby arrives, it’s hard to make time for yourself and you become last on your own list. This is why we feel providing a complete service, from consult, to image creation, to our in-person ordering process ensures that what our client really wants (those beautiful images, custom designed Birth Announcements, Wall Canvases, and Heirloom Albums) are not on their to-do list, they are on ours. All orders are beautifully packaged for pick up or can even be shipped to our clients door step, ready to hang and enjoy.
