Breastfeeding & Gut Health | Newborn Photographer Fayetteville, Wilmington, Clinton, NC

Most moms who’ve been pregnant in the last decade have heard the phrase “breast is best.” Breastfeeding is what our breasts were designed to do. Unfortunately, not all breasts cooperate with this plan. I myself had extreme difficulty breastfeeding and resulted to pumping for many weeks. With baby number 2 I went straight for the baby formula isle…..GASP! Yes. And my baby lived. I say this to frame the information I’m about to share because I don’t want you to think that just because I’m a fancy Newborn Photographer that specializing in photographing babies that I’m going to scold you for choosing to formula feed your child. Never! Us moms all do the best we can do with what we’ve got to work with. Including the ta-tas.

What I want to you learn today is the benefits of colostrum. This is the yellowish ‘first milk’ that your breasts will produce before your ‘milk comes in’ after birth. Some women will produce this colostrum weeks prior to delivering and may experience breast leakage. Fun stuff, right? Baby isn’t even here yet and already your boobs are ready to start doing their job! All jokes aside, you should know that this colostrum is very important to your baby’s GUT HEALTH. It actually inoculates your baby’s gut helping them to develop a healthy digestive system. I DIDN’T know this when I chose to go straight to bottle feeding my second child. Looking back, had someone shared this knowledge I probably would have at least pumped in the last week of pregnancy or a few days right after giving birth in order to bottle feed that golden organic goodness to my baby. While no one can say for sure if this would have prevented his colic or helped him suffer less tummy troubles, it would have nice been to know I’d done everything a mother could do to prevent it. Postpartum Depression | Newborn Photographers Fayetteville NC Wilmington NC

Here on the Vanessa G. Photography blog I talk a lot about the joy and happy experiences of pregnancy and becoming a mother. I often reflect on the best memories I have of my own children as babies and try to share something thoughtful with my readers. Being a newborn photographer, my job has been to capture the wonderful first days of growing families and the perfection of new babies. Today, I want to talk about the dark side of it all, postpartum depression.

When asked, “Hi, how are you?” We are trained to reply, “I’m good!” with a big smile on our faces wether that is how we really feel or not. We feel we need to shield the truth and not bring anyone down. We are expected to “be positive” at all times to prove we are good moms or just plain old good people. After all, no one likes a ‘negative Nancy’ or ‘Debbie downer.’ We don’t feel accepted when we aren’t “looking on the bright side.”

Social media has become a big fake monster. Facebook is not real. Most people post only their happiest moments, not their whole life, their sadness, or their depression. Even in face-to-face life most people do not reveal their true feelings. It’s easy for us to look at the happiest 5% of someone else’s life posted online and then look at our own 100% and feel like we must be falling far short of the line. They are all so happy, or so it seems.

This can be especially true for new moms. You probably aren’t going to see a new mom post a picture of her beautiful newborn and comment about how she cries half the day and feels awful about not wanting to snuggle her baby. She’s not going to tell you she’s feeling angry for no reason and has a complete loss of appetite. Instead, that mom who’s struggling, will cave to social media pressures and post only her moments of delight and little brags about her wonderful new life. You may not know how she is really feeling or what darkness has settled into her mind.

Postpartum Depression is real. It is not “being negative” or “ungrateful” for your blessings. If you find yourself struggling, in tears, or just feeling like life isn’t as great as you thought it’d be, then please seek out help from a friend, family member, and more importantly your OBGYN who should be trained to recognize your battle with happiness. There are so many articles, memes, and quotes circulating that say “happiness is a choice.” When you are facing true depression, that statement is NOT true. You don’t have to reveal your inner struggle with your friends on social media, but you do deserve help and an opportunity to heal your mind and body. Seeking help does not make you weak or a “bad mother,” it makes you human.

Approximately 15% of women experience significant depression following childbirth. Arm yourself with information so you’re ready to help yourself, your friend, or your family member. If you know someone who is struggling with postpartum depression, please reach out to them and help them find appropriate care. Telling them that they are feeling normal “baby blues” or that “it will pass” could be more harmful than you know. Here’s an example of a young mom who hid her depression from her best friends and then took her own life.

**I am not suggesting that this mother has postpartum depression. She is just the beautiful example of a recent Newborn Session completed in our studio.**

Due Date | Fayetteville & Fort Bragg Newborn Baby Photographer

Did you know your due date is only an estimate?

Many mom’s have worried over the years about scheduling their once in a lifetime newborn session with questions like…When should it be scheduled? What if may baby isn’t born on the right day? How do I plan?

In 2015, only one baby from our booked newborn sessions was actually born on their estimated due date. So far in 2016, two have arrived as predicted! That’s how rare we see it happen.

Baby will arrive when baby is ready. This may be two weeks early or 10 days late. We’ve seen both happen. And we pray you do not have the next 10 day late baby.

Here at Vanessa G. Photography, we encourage all pregnant moms to book their newborn session during their second trimester. We then add their due date to our calendar. We limit the number of sessions we take each week/month to allow us to provide excellent customer service to each client and time for our editing process. Sadly, we have had to turn away newborn session bookings when mom’s wait to call us after baby has been born or too close to their due date. Once your due date is on our calendar, we wait for baby to arrive when they are ready. All pre-booked sessions are guaranteed a session date in the first two weeks of baby’s life, when it’s crucial to have the newborn session. Needless to say, our schedule is a bit unpredictable at times and why we limit the number of bookings.

Will I Ever Sleep Again? | Baby Photographers in Whiteville, Lumberton, NC

In the beginning you may find yourself asking, “Will I ever sleep through the night again?”

All mom’s have experienced those first few weeks of sleep deprivation. At first it doesn’t seem like a big deal. But after a few weeks in a row without a single full night of uninterrupted sleep it starts to wear on you. You may feel a bit like a walking zombie during day time hours as your body, and your brain, begs for more rest. The lucky few have a newborn that magically sleeps 5+ hours through the night beginning in their second or third week. It’s much more common, however, for babies not to sleep through the night until 6+ weeks old. And you’re bound to talk to a girlfriend who’s 1 year old is still waking during the night regularly.

Have hope, Moms. Although the road may be long, your baby will eventually sleep through the night. And when it happens you’ll awake with pure joy and do the happy dance all around the house to celebrate such a miracle. It’s amazing what a good nights rest will do for a person. Good luck! I hope tonight is your night!

Share a comment below to let other mom’s know when your baby first starting sleeping through the night.

Full Head of Hair | Newborn Photographers in Fayetteville and Wilmington NC

This little guy has been one of the few I’ve seen this year with this much hair! It’s adorable and amazing all at the same time. Most Newborn’s have at least a little peach fuzz on their heads, but this baby was a stunner with long locks from day one.

They say that if you have a lot of heartburn during your pregnancy that your baby will have lots of hair. That is NOT true. I had terrible heartburn with first baby who was born completely bald.

Let’s take a moment to admire such a beautiful head of hair on the tiniest of people.
